Washington State Library's collection of photographs, slides, videocassette and DVD of the Washington State Library circa 1945-2001 bulk 1945-1960.

This is a collection of Washington State Library (WSL) photographs, negatives, slides, videotape and DVD. It consists of black & white photographs and negatives of WSL from the basement of the Temple of Justice building to the new Pritchard Building. The photographs range in size from 4 in. (10 cm.) x 6 in. (15 cm.) to 8 in. (21 cm.) x 10 in. (26 cm.). Many are duplicates. The photographs document WSL when it occupied the Temple of Justice basement in the 1950's. It covers the photographs of the dedication ceremony of the Joel M. Pritchard Building in Olympia, WA in 1959. Part of the collection contains photographs of the Pritchard Building that are identified as: Opening day, exterior & interior of new library, State Librarian's office, Washington Room and many identified black & white, color and Polaroid photos of identified WSL staff. The collection includes color and black & white slides. The collection covers photographs of staff working on the newspaper project; WSL staff (1998) in the Washington Room; WSL staff entertaining legislators at the library (1969). There are photographs and slides of staff throughout the years. Some of the photographs and slides are staff attending and participating in workshops and conferences. The collection includes a VHS-C tape and DVD titled: "Washington State Library, Pritchard Building Wake, September 19, 2001." The video was shot by Steve Wang. The DVD is a duplicate of the VHS-C tape. The WSL staff held a wake on Sept. 19, 2001 because it was moving out of the Pritchard Building.

Washington State Library was the first American library north of the Columbia River. It was established by the passing of the Organic Act of the Territory of Washington on March 2, 1853.
